Chasing a dream and not letting go best describes digital marketing expert and media practitioner, Danze Edwin John.
The digital marketing guru who boasts of a decade of experience in the industry, reveals that he started his digital marketing journey in a boutique at Garden City in Kampala.
The boutique belonged to fashioned designer, Sylvia Owori who currently works at Director, Operation Wealth Creation.
He was tasked to managed the boutique’s social media communications on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.
Danze, a graduate of Industrial and Fine Art from Makerere University says that while at boutique, he knew he would one day be a big brand in the country.
He would later work with/for a number of advertising agencies until 2017 when he landed a juicy job at NBS TV/ Next Media as Head of Digital Marketing.
“My key role back then was to amplify them online. They were mainly doing social media marketing, then I expanded it, and made it more online marketing. We specialize in social media and community management, curating content from mainly TVs. We didn’t have a radio back then,” Danze told ChimpReports.
Danze boasts of enormous achievements registered at the Naguru based NBS TV, key among them; building a sustainable, functional, interactive audience through engagement on social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter.
“We built audiences on Facebook, becoming the most followed Facebook account and then getting big on Twitter, which was one of my biggest focuses. Building a brand on Twitter was a very big thing. Another thing that I would mention is, we became more analytical and data driven. Most of our decisions online were based on data that is coming from our audiences.”
As the media industry shifts from traditional to digital, with audience looking for news online, Next Media last week laid off dozens of its employees in what the company described as “digital realignment and restructuring.”
“Following the conclusion of our Group CEO’s engagements across the Group on how best we can realign Next Media’s digital strategy to the global digital agenda as demanded by the ongoing global technological advancements, the Group has, over this week, undertaken a restructuring process to serve our audiences more effectively,” the company announced on Wednesday last week.
The company announced that after lengthy deliberation and consideration on this process, the Management and Board of Next Media “have had to make the difficult decision to have some Transformers step down from their roles with us effective Wednesday, November 30, 2022.”
Just a day after the announcement, Danze was promoted to the position of Chief Marketing Officer.
His contribution to the brand, and achievements registered could be what compelled the company to promote him.
“The thing I am most proud of, I would say I have managed to digitize the company even before this digitization campaign or transformation campaign that we are on.”
Danze says he is well practiced, well trained, well mentored.
“I have had exchange programs with our media partners, [for instance] DW because they have been very good to me. I managed to go to Borne (Germany) in 2018 to do a social media week whereby I shared ideas from Africa in a room with people from Zimbabwe, the UK, Germany, Ghana, Nigeria among others.”
Danze has curated and collaborated local and global campaigns with Brands such as Nile Breweries, NSSF, URA, State House Anti Corruption Unit, Pepsi, Coca-Cola, Diageo, Total E&P, Government of Uganda, DW News, Voice of America, Activision, Call of Duty Mobile, Warner Bros, and Marvel Studios.
He has worked on Campaigns such as; 77% Percent, DW in Good Shape, DW Eco-Africa, Call of Duty Mobile, Games and Politics Exhibition, Africa release Movie Premiers like Joker, Avenger Infinity War, Avengers End Game, Wonder Woman 84, Kong vs Godzilla, Mortal Kombat 2021, Afrimaxx among others.
